Motherhood

I have FINALLY been going through pictures from my iPhone and camera.  Pictures from FOREVER ago.  I've been sending pictures often to my parents in Australia to keep them apprised of the happenings and appearances of their grand babies.  But I really want to have a consolidated record of this family of mine.  I know I won't remember half the things that I swear I won't forget... so hopefully this blog will help fill in the gaps some day.

I came across these gems from Easter. As in 6 months ago...half a year ago...basically forever ago. But as I scrolled through the sequence of shots I thought it told a pretty accurate story of motherhood.

I'd given all the children new spring pajamas and wanted to capture a picture of all of them together.

No easy task with 5 kids (two of them 16 months old)
But with a little...ok a lot of patience, time, and effort...

I came away with this sweet photo of happy faces looking for the most part in my general direction. Such a sweet memory!

Motherhood feels a lot like that.

Things are hectic and chaotic and it takes a lot of time and effort and patience to have things run smoothly.  But then for a moment things fall into place and it was all worth it.

This next series of pictures is from later that same day.  We'd just gotten home from church and I wanted to capture everyone in their new Easter clothes (the acquiring of said clothes in correct sizes and coordinating colors had been no small task and I wanted to document my success...and my adorable children).  After church is never a good time for pictures (or anything constructive for that matter) but we of course hadn't had time BEFORE church so this was the best option I had.

Just like the pajama pictures, it was not easy to get everyone to sit still,

...or sit at all

...or cooperate in any way,

...even with a different setting

But with a little patience, (which I had none of at this point), and more time and more effort

...it was still a total disaster

Motherhood feels a lot like that too...

Sometimes everything goes wrong, everyone is mad, the house is a disaster, we're running late, and chaos is king.  There are some things no amount of patience and effort can fix at that moment and you have to know when to cut your losses.  Especially for things that don't really matter. Like maybe trying to take a picture when little people are hungry, tired, and done being in church clothes.  (Seeing how adorable the dresses and vests are together...and Grant's pinstripe pants!!! you can at least see why I really really wanted to get that picture right?)

6 months later I'm not sure I like the "everyone looking" pajama picture any better than the "total meltdown" Easter pictures.  Both tell stories that are 100% accurate of this phase of life.  And besides, how awesome is Lucy's face in the 2nd to last photo?

Classic.

Sugar & Spice and Everything Nice vs. Frogs, Snails & Puppy Dog Tails

When I found out I was having boy girl twins, other twin moms warned me that I would still get asked if the babies were identical.  They were right.  It happens all the time.  When I do get asked if they're identical I'm always tempted to say, "Well, Grant is a boy and Grace is a girl so...."  But usually I just smile and politely say no.

But seriously, Grant is ALL BOY and Gracie is ALL GIRL.

Beauty and the Beast
(I mean that in the best way Grant!)

Grant and Grace are the perfect poster-children for gender stereotypes.  Grace is all talk, talk, talk, giggle giggle, giggle.  Grant is SMASH, CRASH, BOOM!!

I know they say you should never compare your children to each other...especially twins.  I think that is really good advice...that I am totally going to ignore right now because I want to remember how Grant and Gracie are different from each other.   We call them the "babies" and the "twins" and I will be forever grateful that they have each other and came as a pair.  But I want to make sure I remember them as individuals.   Because their little personalities are different and it is so fun to watch them develop.
Gracie is smaller, more petite and more delicate. Sweet is a great word to describe her.  She makes cute little sounds, plays intently with toy phones and Little People.  She is very aware of feelings and of what is going on around her and does not want to be left out of anything!  If Chad or I ever try to get Grant to walk, or something new she bee-lines it right over to us and tries to do the same thing!  She almost never takes toys away from Grant and often just finds something else when he confiscates what she was playing with.  But she is not a pushover.  If there is something that she is particularly attached to Grant has almost a zero chance of getting it from her little hands.  Her "evasive maneuvers" are getting pretty impressive.  She'd make a great running back if she ever decides to walk.  If Grant DOES manage to steal something she really wants she throws such a fit that she always gets it back (thanks to my intervention!)
(12-12-13)
this photo is already outdated

She LOVES her pink bear named "Annie" and rubs her noes into it the exact same way Jack did with his bear.  She loves her bottle but drinking is a private affair for her.  She'd rather drink her bottle in the crib than in my arms. She holds the bottle in her mouth with one hand and Annie over her face with her other hand.  So.stinking.cute.  She's not clingy or fussy, but a little more attached than Grant.  She is more reserved around strangers and takes time to warm up to people...but she isn't grumpy...just reserved.  She's also more cautious than Grant.  Grant would willingly launch himself down the stairs with out a second (or even a first) thought.  Once at a friends house, Gracie had made her way to the top of a very long flight of stairs then patiently called for me until I realized where she was and ran to get her. That said she's a lot braver than Grant.  We call him the "Cowardly Lion" because he's all brash and bold in his actions but if a new toy appears or something makes a strange sound, or Chad tries to toss him in the air he is terrified!  Grace on the other hand is completely un-phased.   She just learned to "give five" and it thrills her to no end.  She isn't much of a wanderer- but if I loose sight of her for a few minutes I usually find her in the laundry room calling for me because Grant followed her in and closed the door...locking them both in!

(also 12-12-13 and outdated.  Since this photo the curls have multiplied exponentially!)

Grant is full of life!  Wild and soooooo physical.  I have to remember to keep Gracie's high chair out of his reach because he takes food from her tray and if he can reach her...he has been known to pull her sleeve so far that her arm came out of her shirt and on more than one occasion he actually bit her!  Grant would sooner walk through or over something rather than have to go around.  He LOVES to head-butt Chad but anyone will do. knocking over Marian while she's trying to practice the violin is another favorite activity.  His head is like a brick.  He gave me an honest to goodness black eye last month.  Grace tends to play in the same general area but Grant is all over the place and usually crawls or steps right over (or on) Gracie to get where he is going next.  If Gracie is playing quietly with some toys Grant is frantically chasing a ball (that he is throwing himself) all over the main floor of the house.  OR he is pushing the toy walker or fire truck around the house as fast as his little legs will go.
Due to his exploratory nature and really flexible hips Grant can already climb into the tub and on the couch. Once on the couch he can jump with both feet in the air while holding on to the cushions.  We seem to have a little athlete on our hands.
He LOVES to empty out cupboards and is not too happy when he finds one with the knobs rubber-banded together.  I haven't found a way to keep him out of the drawers so several times a day he empties out the Tupperware and kid dishes and climbs right in!  Gracie likes to join in the fun too but she is not usually the instigator.  Now I know why the bottom drawer was broken when we bought this house!  When we go to Costco Gracie greets everyone who comes up to her with a cautious smile.  Grant treats them as his new best friend and as as a result gets a lot of attention from strangers.  The head full of curls doesn't hurt his popularity either.  At church Grace will crawl up to people and shyly smile at them and then crawl back to me.  She LOVES to smile and make eye contact with whoever sits behind us...but likes to do it best from my lap.  Grant on the other hand, crawls up to people, smiles at them intently... until they pick him up and play with him.

At this age Jack, Marian, and Lucy had clear favorites when it came to stories and songs.  I'm not gonna lie...I couldn't even begin to guess what books or songs Grant or Grace like best because truth is we don't get much story time in and I have not been very good at having one on one lullaby time with these two.  I will need to work on that.  But I can say that Gracie seems to be more interested in books.  Sometimes if she seems not quite ready to go to bed (I keep both babies on the same schedule so they kind have to just roll with it even if they're not tired) I'll give her a book to look at in her crib and she looks at it happily until she falls asleep. The last time I gave Grant a book to look at in his crib he ate it.  I'm not kidding.

Their different relationships with their older siblings are fun to observe too.  All the kids love both of the babies and I honestly don't think any of them love one more than another but they each seem to be drawn more to one than another.  Marian...lover of all things girly- is drawn more often to Gracie and loves to talk to her in her little "mommy voice".  She carries Gracie around everywhere (totally ignoring the "no carrying babies" rule) and is quick to defend Gracie if Grant is taking her stuff.  Either as a reaction to the Marian-Grace relationship or just sheer preference Lucy tends to interact more with Grant.  Grant LOVES to pounce on Lucy and maul her and Lucy loves it.  They rough house with each other in their mostly gentle way and it is actually a pretty fair fight.  Jack is enamored with both babies and it is interesting to see that he treats them differently.  He is sweet and gentle with Gracie and more rough and boy-ish with Grant.

Grant has been an absolute joy since he was born.  Grace has been an absolute joy since she was born just one minute later!  So grateful to have these two sweet babies in our family!

The many faces of Lucy

This is what happens when Lucy gets a hold of my phone! (Just for clarification...she's not at all sad. Just trying to perfect her pouty face!)

Father-less weekend

Chad has been gone on a business trip and it's a total bummer for the rest of here.  To be fair he won't have even been gone 48 hours when he gets in late tonight...but Sundays without Chad just aren't near as great as they are when he's here.
This is from the rousing game of UNO last Sunday.  Anyone who knows Chad knows he is
compe-ti-tive
He does not "let the kids win" (except for maybe Lucy).  And I keep telling him we are going to raise friendless children if they use as much trash talk with their friends as Chad does with them but the kids eat it up.  It makes their victory all the sweeter if they ever do beat their dad!  Sunday card games with dad is a highlight around here and we really missed it yesterday.  I tried to fill in as best as I could but it just wasn't as fun.  Chad makes everything more fun.  So glad traveling is not a usual part of his job!

From the Mouth of Babes

Lucy: For my birthday I want a Sofia the First dress...and a Sofia amulet...and Sofia shoes...oh and her crown.  I would look so beauuuuuuutiful in her crown mommy!  Oh and a scooter and...and ...and etc... (continued for 5 uninterrupted minutes...I know because I was timing).
Me: vague smile which clearly indicates that she will not be getting everything on her list
Lucy: Well...let's just talk about this later

Gracie: Ah-dun ah-dun ah-dun!  {translation: I am done being stuck in this high chair and would like to get down NOW!}

Grant: Goalie-goalie-goalie {translation: ??????____but it clearly indicates feelings of happiness- really it is the CUTEST sound}

Jack: Mom! What is with you today? (remarked rather loudly while I was teaching actions during singing time)
Pretty sure I embarrass him sometimes!

Lucy: Mom do you play with my toys in your tub or no?
(she ends just about all of her questions with the phrase "or no?")

Gracie:  eh?  eh? (her response to almost any question we ask her)

Chad{wearing his usual BYU sweat shirt}:  Lucy what does it say on my sweatshirt?
Lucy: (pointing to each letter) B...Y.... ummm B...Y...ummm what's it again?
**this goes on for an uncomfortably long time and she appears to be thinking very hard.  Eventually with excessive hints she gets it only to be completely stumped again the next time! This  happens several times a week at our house.  A house in which BYU is talked about non-stop and the all the kids make Chad cards decorated with BYU all over it.  Should we be worried?

Marian: Mom did I make my goal today?
Me: I don't know what was your goal? ( I honestly didn't know anything about it)
Marian:  To be good the whole day and not talk sassy to you!

Lucy:  DADDY!  Don't forget your hug and kiss!!!!
(Said every.single.day!  The mornings when she does forget she breaks down in tears until she can give Chad his morning "loves" over the phone.

What families do

Being a part of a family really is an incredible thing.  By choice or by birth…all 7 members of this household are stuck together and have to learn how to navigate all the ups and downs of life together.

Sometimes…sometimes it is joyful and easy.
Sometimes…especially among the kids… it is epically bad.

But…because we are a family we keep trying to learn to love, and to forgive.  Scenes like this prove my point better than words ever could.

Here is Jack, happily reading books on his bunk bed to Marian and Lucy…when only hours before he had nothing but harsh words and total rage for one of his sisters (whether or not it was deserved I won’t get into).  And the amount of screaming and shrieking on the sister end was almost unbearable (and I must say I have developed a pretty high tolerance for that over the years).   And during Family Home Evening when we were writing what we loved about each other on little Valentine hearts, there was more than one person who loudly proclaimed they couldn't possibly think of anything to write. It blows my mind that pictures like this are even possible after days like we had today.  But I guess it shouldn’t.  I’m learning that this is what families do.... at least our family.
We try to love one-another…we often fail in a big way
(myself very much included)…
but then... we try again.
Amazing
So now the big question is how long do I let this moment of sibling love continue? I put them to bed an hour ago…9:00 is creeping up and I know I’ll have grumpy children in the morning if I don’t put an end to their sibling love-fest soon.   Truth is, they might be grumpy tomorrow anyway so I think I’ll go watch the DVR’d  Downton Abbey instead.  Plus…with the rate at which our basement is getting finished the kids aren’t going to be sharing a room together for much longer!  Now there is something that will really increase sibling love…separate bedrooms for all!!!!
(Grant and Gracie are exempt from previous statement)
...unless Gracie finally gets fed up with Grant throwing every.single.item. from his crib (often including his pants) into her crib whenever he wakes up.)

This is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you...

The time has come to deal with the binky crazed, sippy cup addict I have created.  Well...the time probably came and passed several months ago.  Lucy is on the verge of turning four and she can't bear to watch tv, pretend to take her naps, or deal with any type of unhappiness unless she has her "binkies, bobbies (blanket), and a sippy cup of milk".  Part of me thinks "what's wrong with having a few things that bring you comfort?"...but the other part of me answers back, "you spend half of your life searching for binkies, washing curdled milk out of sippy cups found under the back corners of Lucy's bed while my almost 4 year old yells impatiently for milk... and she doesn't even take naps any more... so really what's in it for me?"  Either way, it's time. Really this is taking away my comfort objects too because I can always get Lucy to be content and manageable as long as I have a sippy cup of milk and a binky.  That can really come in handy when the other 4 are having different melt downs of one kind or another.  Lucy could probably have been fine getting rid of the binkies and sippy cups a long time ago but I was really REALLY not ready to let them go...until now.  As I was getting ready to cut the tops off the binkies this morning (really fun moms have the binky fairy come and leave a present in exchange for all the binkies.  Less fun moms like me cut off the tops and tell the kids the binkies just got too old and don't work anymore...at least they can keep them for sentimental value right?) I honestly stood there with the scissors for a minute or two debating if this really was a good idea. But like I said, it's time.  Wish me...and Lucy luck.

so long...farewell

Getting back into blogging

The days are long but the years are short!  Life is just blowing by so quickly I can hardly stand it!  That is one reason I want to keep up this record of our family.  I've thought that for a long time but clearly it wasn't enough motivation.  2 things this week have finally kicked me into gear.  The first was Marian's kindergarten VIP poster:
(excuse all the blurry iPhone pictures...that's right I have joined all of modern America and finally got a smart phone)
Marian and I had THE BEST time putting together this poster.  It was so fun to talk to Marian about what she was like when she was a baby and a little toddler.

It brought back such great memories for me and so obviously made Marian feel SO loved!  The impact it had on her made me realize how important it is to keep a record of my children's childhood.

Lucy fell asleep in my lap while Marian and I were typing up Marian's list of "Things I Love"..  If I am ever sitting down there is a good chance Lucy will be right in my lap.

The 2nd thing that has convinced me to get back into blogging is Jack.  He checks this blog regularly and LOVES to look back and read about things we did and look at pictures from Boston.  If he were the only reader of this blog I think it would still be worth it.  I think having this record is a way to preserve feelings of love and happiness (we can always use more of that) and a way for my children to have a greater sense of family. I don't know if that makes as much sense outside of my head as it does inside but there it is.

Jack's "100th day of school" poster.  Jack came up with this all on his own and was so happy to see his idea on paper!  We had fun counting and gluing all those Cheerios and pretzels last night.  Jack is a number wiz...the way his brain computes is amazing to me!

Here's to new attempts to keep a better record of this magical (may I add exhausting/trying/exasperating/) time in our family when all 5 of our kids are little and underfoot!
